Straw Bale Insulation

We use straw bales to insulate our growing benches. Just like bridges freeze first, our growing benches are more vulnerable to freeze because the air underneath them is not good at holding heat. We pack bales under the benches to help the heat in multiple ways:

1. The bales act similarly to a wind block, buffering temperature decreases under the benches and helping to prevent freezing temps in the growing media and directly in the plant root zones.

2. As the bales take on moisture, decomposition occurs and gives off heat. The next summer, as these bales decompose (aka condition), the most broken down bales get moved outside along our split rail fence out front to build a straw bale demonstration garden. We then replace bales as needed for insulation the following winter.
